Brazilian Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Sculpting is a specialist massage approach that combines lymphatic drainage techniques, to encourage the movement of lymph and reduce fluid congestion, with body contouring “sculpting” movements aimed at enhancing shape and definition.
At the London School of Massage, the course is open to qualified massage therapists (Level 3 and above). Students must hold an Ofqual-accredited Level 3 Diploma in Massage including Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology (or equivalent), or higher.
Brazilian MLD is commonly booked for both wellbeing and aesthetic goals. Potential benefits include:
In traditional/medical MLD, oils and lotions are often not required because the technique works lightly on the skin.
However, Brazilian MLD is often performed with oil to allow smoother, more continuous strokes used in sculpting-style sequences.
For Brazilian MLD, the best choice is usually a light, fragrance-free, non-irritating product that provides slip without being greasy, such as grapeseed oil.
Traditional Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, slow, clinical technique designed to support lymph flow and help manage swelling/oedema, using very light skin-stretch movements. Brazilian lymphatic drainage is typically a faster, more continuous style that blends lymphatic strokes with body sculpting/contouring techniques and is often marketed for “de-bloating” and aesthetic results.
Brazilian MLD commonly uses oils to support longer, continuous strokes, while traditional MLD uses little to no oil.
