What You will Learn in this Spinal Articulation & Mobilisation Course

Spinal Articulation & Mobilisation is a practical course designed for massage and sports therapists who wish to develop safe, controlled and effective spinal mobilisation skills. The course introduces key principles of body palpation, surface anatomy, spinal assessment and hands-on mobilisation techniques, with a strong focus on clinical reasoning, client safety and professional scope of practice.

Students will learn how to assess spinal movement, understand joint mechanics and apply appropriate mobilisation techniques to the thoracic spine, ribs, lumbar spine and sacroiliac joint. The course also explains the importance of cautions, contraindications, consent and safe practice when working with spinal techniques.

During the course, you will learn:

  • Body palpation, including how to palpate and what to feel for
  • Surface anatomy of the body to support accurate assessment and technique application
  • The meaning of articulation, mobilisation and manipulation
  • The difference between joint mobilisation and manipulation
  • The benefits and therapeutic aims of mobilisation and manipulation
  • How mobilisation may help reduce pain, improve range of motion and encourage reflex muscle relaxation
  • The mechanisms of joint manipulation
  • The five grades of joint mobilisation and how they relate to treatment application
  • The role of synovial joints and synovial fluid in joint movement, lubrication and shock absorption
  • The principles of cavitation, including why joints may “crack” or “pop”
  • What is meant by the para-physiological space and barrier
  • The difference between active movement, passive movement, mobilisation and manipulation
  • The proposed biomechanical and neurophysiological effects of spinal manipulation
  • How joint gapping may influence spinal joints and surrounding tissues
  • The importance of client consultation, case history and informed consent
  • How to carry out a clinical examination using observation, palpation, active movements, passive movements and special tests
  • How to recognise cautions and contraindications to manipulation
  • Why excessive force should never be used
  • How to work safely within professional scope of practice
  • Thoracic spine assessment and mobilisation techniques
  • Rib assessment and mobilisation techniques
  • Lumbar spine assessment and mobilisation techniques
  • Sacroiliac joint assessment and mobilisation techniques
  • How to use relevant orthopaedic assessment tests
  • How to apply practical techniques such as thoracic extension, thoracic rotation, lumbar gapping, lumbar roll, sacroiliac mobilisation and selected MET approaches
  • The importance of practitioner insurance, risk management and maintaining high clinical standards when using spinal mobilisation techniques

Please note: Cervical spine articulation principles may be discussed, but cervical manipulation will NOT be taught on this course.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Spinal Articulation & Mobilisation Course London

What is Spinal Articulation & Mobilisation?

Spinal Articulation and Mobilisation are gentle, hands-on manual therapy techniques used to improve movement in the spine. They involve controlled, passive movements (often rhythmic/oscillatory) applied to a specific spinal area to help restore comfortable mobility and ease stiffness.

High-velocity spinal manipulation (thrust techniques) are quick, specific movements applied to a spinal joint with the aim of improving joint motion and reducing stiffness. They are distinct from spinal mobilisation, which uses slower, rhythmic, graded movements. Because thrust techniques require careful screening for contraindications, precise technique and clear scope of practice, they should only be performed by appropriately trained professionals.

Joint mobilisation is commonly used to support:

  • Pain relief (often short-term/immediate symptom relief).
  • Improved joint range of motion (ROM) and mobility, especially when stiffness is limiting movement.
  • Reduced stiffness and improved movement quality/function when combined with a good home-care plan (e.g., mobility/strength work).

At the London School of Massage, Spinal Articulation & Mobilisation is taught as a fast-track, intensive 2-day course, which is accredited by CMA, BCMA & IGCT.
