Baby & Infant Massage Instructors Diploma Course London

What is Baby Massage?

Baby Massage (also called Infant Massage) is a series of gentle, rhythmic strokes that parents or caregivers use to massage their baby, often as part of a calming routine. It’s commonly used to support bonding, relaxation and comfort (for example around wind/colic), and many babies find it soothing and sleep-friendly.

Students must hold an Ofqual-accredited Level 3 Diploma in Massage or equivalent for the full accredited certificate. Those without this qualification may attend but will only receive a Certificate of Attendance.

This course is designed for learners with a relevant therapy, healthcare or bodywork background. To receive the full accredited certificate, students must hold an Ofqual-accredited Level 3 Massage qualification or equivalent that includes Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology.

You will learn infant anatomy and physiology, baby cues, consent-by-cueing, safe session pacing, a full baby massage sequence, contraindications, oils, hygiene, safeguarding, parent teaching skills, class planning and professional boundaries.

The main focus is teaching parents and caregivers how to massage their own babies safely. Students learn the techniques, but professional practice should be based on instruction, demonstration and parent-led touch rather than replacing the parent’s role.

Baby Massage can be safe when it is gentle, baby-led and the baby is well. Parents should follow their baby’s cues and stop if the baby appears unsettled, uncomfortable, unwell or overstimulated. Medical advice should be sought where there are concerns.

Yes. Parents should speak to their GP, doctor, midwife or health visitor before starting Baby Massage if the baby was premature, has a medical condition, skin problem, fever, infection, recent vaccination concerns, feeding difficulties or any other health concern.

The course covers contraindications and cautions such as fever, infection, illness, skin irritation, eczema flare-ups, recent surgery, medical conditions, premature birth considerations, overstimulation, baby distress and when to refer to a healthcare professional.

Yes. The course introduces baby massage routines that may support relaxation and comfort around wind, colic-like symptoms and settling. These techniques should not be presented as medical treatment and parents should seek medical advice for ongoing symptoms.

The course covers safe oil choices, patch testing, hygiene and skin sensitivity. Parents are usually advised to use simple, unscented, baby-safe products and avoid strong essential oils or fragranced products unless professionally advised.

Assessment includes in-class teaching practice, tutor feedback, written assignments and case studies. Students complete case studies teaching a group of four or more parents and babies, plus private tuition case study work outside the school.

Yes. The course is accredited by FHT, CMA, BCMA, IGCT and IICT and provides 14 CPD points. Students should check insurance requirements before teaching Baby Massage professionally.

Qualified students may teach Baby Massage to parents and caregivers after completing the course, case studies and certification, subject to professional insurance, safeguarding responsibilities and scope of practice.

London School of Massage has been delivering professional massage and complementary therapy training since 1994. The course is taught by experienced lecturers who understand baby massage, parent education, safe touch, communication and professional boundaries.
