Frequently Asked Questions:

VTCT Thai Massage Diploma London

What is Thai Massage?

Thai Massage (often called traditional Thai Massage or Thai yoga massage) is a hands-on bodywork style that combines rhythmic acupressure with assisted stretches and joint mobilisation. It’s typically done without oils, and the therapist uses hands, forearms, elbows (and sometimes knees/feet) to apply pressure and guide the body through passive, yoga-like stretches.

A straightforward route is:

  • Complete a recognised Thai Massage qualification (e.g., a VTCT Level 3 Certificate in Thai Massage).
  • Train with a provider that teaches safe practice and supports professional progression - London School of Massage’s Thai Massage course includes Anatomy, Physiology & Pathology (home study) and awards a VTCT Level 3 Certificate, plus an FHT accredited diploma certificate.
  • Arrange professional insurance and If you’ll be working from premises, check local council licensing requirements before advertising or practising.

You don’t need a specific “Thai Massage licence” as a practitioner in the UK, but to practise professionally and safely, a recognised qualification is strongly recommended. This is because:

  • Insurers commonly require a recognised professional qualification to provide cover for massage (including Thai Massage).
  • If you work from a clinic/salon/studio (or some home-based setups), you may need a massage and special treatment premises licence from your local council.

For client safety, always work within your training, screen for contraindications, and refer to a healthcare professional when appropriate.

Key differences clients notice straight away:

  • Thai massage is commonly performed fully clothed and without oils, while many Western/holistic massages use oil on a table.
  • Thai massage focuses on assisted stretching + acupressure-style pressure, rather than mainly gliding strokes/kneading.
  • Thai massage is often more active and movement-based (sometimes described as “assisted yoga”).
