Frequently Asked Questions:

VTCT Aromatherapy Diploma Course London

What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of essential oils (highly concentrated plant extracts) to support wellbeing. Oils are typically used by inhalation (for example, via a diffuser) and/or topical application (always diluted in a carrier oil), often alongside massage. NHS patient information commonly describes aromatherapy as using essential oils to help improve wellbeing for mind and body.

There’s no single mandatory qualification by law, but in practice you’ll typically need:

  • A recognised Aromatherapy qualification that covers essential oil safety, blending, consultation skills, and professional practice
  • Anatomy, physiology and pathology knowledge (often built into professional diplomas)
  • Massage skills if you plan to deliver aromatherapy massage (common in spa/wellbeing settings)

If you want to join a respected UK voluntary register, training should meet National Occupational Standards (NOS) and an Aromatherapy Core Curriculum, as required for CNHC eligibility.

From start to finish, becoming a certified Aromatherapist can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months.

Aromatherapy itself isn’t statutorily licensed in the UK, but you may need:

  • Professional training + insurance - often required by employers, venues, and professional associations.
  • A premises licence if you provide massage/special treatments from certain locations
In London, many boroughs require a Special Treatment licence for premises offering treatments such as massage (which can include aromatherapy massage). It can be illegal to provide or advertise such treatments from a premises without the required licence.

A rule of thumb? Check your local council requirements before you practise from a clinic, studio, salon, or home treatment room.

Aromatherapy can be a fantastic career choice for people who want flexible, meaningful work in the growing wellbeing space. As a qualified Aromatherapist, you get to support clients with relaxation, stress management and overall wellbeing through tailored essential oil blends and professional treatment, often building strong long-term relationships and repeat bookings. It’s a career that can fit around your lifestyle—whether you choose self-employment, spa work, or combining aromatherapy with massage—and it offers clear opportunities to specialise, increase your skills through CPD, and develop a loyal client base. With the right training, professional standards and a confident approach to client care, aromatherapy can be both personally rewarding and commercially sustainable.

Income varies widely as many Aromatherapists are self-employed, set their own prices, and may work part-time, However they commonly earn around £45–£75 per treatment.

Earnings usually increase with: client base, location and offering massage alongside aromatherapy.

There is no single statutory “governing body” for Aromatherapy in the UK. Instead, the landscape includes voluntary organisations such as:

  • The International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA)
  • The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists (IFPA)
  • The Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC)
For public trust and good practice, many practitioners choose to align with a professional body, where clients can look for therapists listed on recognised registers.

An Aromatherapy Massage usually includes:

  • Consultation & safety screening – your therapist asks about symptoms, lifestyle, allergies, medications, asthma, skin sensitivity, and relevant medical history to ensure oils and techniques are suitable.
  • Oil selection & blending – essential oils are selected and diluted in a carrier oil (for example, sweet almond or grapeseed) at a safe concentration.
  • The massage treatment – massage techniques are used while the aroma supports relaxation; oils can enter via the skin and the sense of smell.
  • Aftercare – advice may include hydration, avoiding sun exposure if a photosensitising oil was used, and what to do if any irritation occurs.
Most side effects relate to essential oil sensitivity or incorrect use. Possible side effects include:

  • Skin irritation or contact dermatitis (redness, itching, rash), especially if oils are too strong or applied repeatedly
  • Allergic reactions (including delayed allergic contact dermatitis)
  • Headache, nausea or dizziness from strong aromas or poor ventilation
  • Photosensitivity (skin becomes more reactive to light) with some oils, particularly certain citrus oils; this can show up as redness, pain, itching or rash after light exposure
Safety basics: do not ingest essential oils, and avoid applying them undiluted (“neat”) to the skin unless you’ve been specifically trained and it’s clinically appropriate.

Aromatherapy can be safe when used appropriately, but pregnancy is a situation where you should be more cautious.

If you’re pregnant, consult your midwife, GP or pharmacist before any aromatherapy treatment or essential oil use, and only book with a qualified practitioner who can confirm what’s appropriate for your stage of pregnancy.
